Chris Clemons absent from mandatory minicamp
The absence was not excused, coach Pete Carroll indicated, and subjects him to a fine of as much as $10,000 under the new collective-bargaining agreement. He will be fined an additional $20,000 if he misses a second day and another $30,000 if he misses a third day.
Coach Pete Carroll addressed Clemons' absence after the practice.
"This was kind of a late development that he's not (here)," Carroll said. "So I'm a little bit surprised that he's not here. We've had open communications with the agent, and with Chris, and feel like everything is on the up-and-up and very amicable and all that."
So what's the sticking point?
Well, Clemons is entering the final year of his contract, and after totaling 22 sacks in the previous two seasons for Seattle, he's hoping for a new contract. Carroll said the team is not averse to that idea.
"It continues to be one of our priorities," Carroll said. "We'd love to get him back, but it doesn't look like he's going to show up for the rest of the camp."
Where it goes from here remains to be seen. Carroll did not look ahead toward any possible implications at training camp.
Clemons was the only one of the 90 players on Seattle's roster absent from the training-camp practice.
Clemons is scheduled to make more than $4 million in 2012.
• WR Golden Tate was again watching workouts. He has a small crack in a bone in his hand, but Carroll indicated he is very close to being able to play and he will be running routes at times during the minicamp, just not catching passes.
• WR Sidney Rice was out of the red jersey, but still not cleared for contact as he recovers from offseason surgery on both shoulders. He had the right shoulder operated on first, then the left shoulder. He indicated he expects to be ready when the regular season starts.
