Seahawks choose DE Bruce Irvin, West Virginia

The Seattle Seahawks selected Bruce Irvin, a defensive end from West Virginia with the 15th pick of the draft. Seattle received that pick as part of a trade, picking up a fourth and seventh-round choice from Philadelphia to move from the 12th overall to the No. 15.

Irvin is 6 feet 3, weighs 248 pounds, but teams also had character concerns.

Mike Mayock, NFL draft analyst, listed Irvin as the best pure pass rusher available in the draft, but also pointed to character concerns.

Irvin did not graduate from high school, instead receiving his G.E.D. He committed to both Tennessee and Arizona State, but ended up at Arizona State. According to the Dominion Post, Irvin was cited for destruction of property and disorderly conduct earlier this year. He had also spent time in jail before receiving his G.E.D.

Irvin was asked about his background in February at the NFL scouting combine:

"Grew up in a rough neighborhood in Atlanta, dropped out of high school in 11th grade and got in some trouble, ran with the wrong crowd. Finally saw the light, got my GED, took the test and passed all five parts on the first time. That January I went to school and never looked back."
    -- Bruce Irvin, West Virginia

Irvin said he was jailed -- on two charges -- for a total of about three weeks.
