Seahawks sign three: Lutui, Ruud and Roy Lewis
The Seahawks announced three players agreed to terms on one-year contracts Friday: offensive lineman Deuce Lutui, linebacker Barrett Ruud and cornerback Roy Lewis.
Lutui comes to Seattle from Arizona where he played for the previous six five seasons after being drafted by the Cardinals in the second round out of USC where he played under coach Pete Carroll. Lutui agreed to a contract with Cincinnati last year after the lockout, but failed a physical exam, nullifying the deal. He returned to Arizona where he was a starter for the fifth consecutive season.
Ruud, 28, was a long-time Tampa Bay linebacker who appeared in nine games while playing for Tennessee last season. Ruud had more than 100 tackles in four successive seasons for Tampa Bay, from 2007 to 2010 before leaving for Tennessee. He gives Seattle a veteran capable of playing middle linebacker after David Hawthorne -- the team's leading tackler the past three seasons -- signed with New Orleans in free agency.
Lewis was a one-time practice-squad player who played his way into Seattle's nickel package the past two seasons and became a special-teams captain.
Note: I'm on assignment in Montana, and am en route to the airport to catch a flight I hope I don't miss. Will update with more details once I can.
