Carroll says punt-return penalty unwarranted

Questionable calls in spotlight after loss
By Danny O'Neil, The Seattle Times
RENTON -- The news didn't get any better for the Seahawks one day after their 6-3 loss in Cleveland.
Not in terms of cornerback Walter Thurmond, who will be out four to six months after undergoing surgery to repair an injured ankle and broken leg.
Not in terms of Leon Washington's 81-yard punt return for a touchdown, which was nullified by a block-in-the-back penalty against Kennard Cox.
"I didn't think that was a call that should have been made," coach Pete Carroll said. "That was unfortunate."
The penalty was called near midfield, and replays showed minimal contact between Cox and the Browns' Kevin Dockery who may not have been able to make the play.
"There's a lot of calls that happen at light speed out there that are challenging to call, and that was one," Carroll said. "Unfortunately it was the play of the game for us. It was our touchdown in this game, and it got away from us, you know."
The Seahawks placed Thurmond on injured reserve, and claimed cornerback Ron Parker off waivers from the Oakland Raiders. Parker is an undrafted rookie who was with the Seahawks in training camp and began the season on the practice squad.Dec 24 - 6:10 AM Looking back: Revisiting Sunday's scouting report
