Game in review: Browns 6, Seahawks 3

Posted by Danny O'Neil

Players of the game

Seahawks defensive tackle Red Bryant had three solo tackles, half a sack and he became the first player in franchise history to block two field goals in a single game before being ejected in the fourth quarter of Seattle's loss.

Cleveland kicker Phil Dawson made two field goals, each from 53 yards, and those two kicks made him Man of the Match in a football game with fútbol-like scoring.

Play of the game

Leon Washington returned a punt 81 yards for what appeared to be the go-ahead touchdown only to have it called back because of a block-in-the-back penalty against Kennard Cox. Cleveland's Kevin Dockery may have, um, embellished the impact of that block in the back, drawing the flag that nullified what would have been Washington's first touchdown of the season. Instead of six points, Seattle had first down at its own 45. Quarterback Charlie Whitehurst was intercepted on the game's next play.

Turning point

The Browns had the ball at their own 48 midway through the fourth quarter, facing third-and-11 with a 6-3 lead. The Seahawks blitzed on the play, sending both Kam Chancellor and Kennard Cox. Cleveland quarterback Colt McCoy juked past Cox, and ran for 12 yards, diving to gain the first down and extend the drive. Of Cleveland's three third-down conversions on the drive, McCoy's scramble was the most damaging as the Browns consumed 5:59 off the clock.

Seahawks surprises

By the numbers

137 -- yards of total offense for Seattle, fewest by the Seahawks in any game since Oct. 18, 2009. 9 -- Points total between the two teams, the fewest in any Seahawks game in history. 1 -- offensive play that gained more than 20 yards in the entire game. 0 -- drives inside the opponent's 30 in the first half.

Injuries

Seahawks -- Cornerback Walter Thurmond suffered a broken fibula in the second quarter and is out for the year. Running back Marshawn Lynch did not play because of back spasms. Safety Kam Chancellor suffered a bruised knee, but returned. Browns -- Tight end Ben Watson and receiver Mohamed Massoquoi suffered concussions. DB Ray Ventrone left with a sore hamstring, OL Shawn Lauvao suffered a knee injury.

Quoteworthy

Coach Pete Carroll: "We left the margin too close. We thought we could do more than this, particularly on offense, but it was just one of those games."
