New Seahawk: 'Shirley you've heard of my brother'

Posted by Danny O'Neil

RENTON -- Defensive lineman Jason Shirley is new to the Seahawks locker room, but he's not entirely a stranger in town.

First, there's Clinton McDonald, his teammate on the defensive line in Cincinnati whom Shirley is joining in the Seahawks locker room. Then there's Josh Shirley, his younger brother who's playing for the Washington Huskies.

The Seahawks signed Shirley (Jason) earlier this week, taking the spot on the roster that opened up when cornerback Marcus Trufant was placed on injured reserve. Shirley (Jason) was a player the Seahawks were originally interested in acquiring from the Bengals in the trade for cornerback Kelly Jennings, but Cincinnati wanted to hold on to Shirley in August, only to release him in final roster cuts.

Shirley (Josh) is a pass rusher for Washington, but Shirley (Jason) is a 345-pound nose tackle. He was a fifth-round pick by the Bengals in 2008, played his first season on the defensive line, and switched to offensive guard for a time in 2009.

Ending up in the same city as his brother was a bonus for Jason.

"I was keeping in contact with him when I was in Cincinnati, but there's nothing like being in the same city," Jason said. "My Dad and my Mom are really excited about coming up here to see his game and then come and see my game. So it's a positive thing for my family."

Both the Seahawks and Huskies play at home theweekend after next-- Washington hosts Arizona on Saturday and then Seattle plays at home Sunday against the Bengals --so while Shirley is new in town, there are familiar faces.

I don't think the 'Airplane' humor is going to make it past the editor, but I got a chuckle out of it.  Posted on October 20, 2011 at 10:45 AM by tompage. Jump to comment
