49ers mascot 150.jpgSan Francisco is in its first year under coach Jim Harbaught, and the focus is on the future and not the present, according to Kevin Lynch of the San Francisco Chronicle.

The 49ers acquired rookie quarterback Scott Tolzien, who had been at training camp with San Diego. He becomes the third quarterback on the roster behind starter Alex Smith and backup Colin Kaepernick, the team's second-round pick. Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area looks at those two rookies on the depth chart and sees no safety net behind Smith.

The 49ers are like the Seahawks, still tweaking the roster. San Francisco added linebacker Tavares Gooden on Monday. Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee details San Francisco's thought process for bringing Gooden aboard.

The 49ers drafted two rookies and installed them on the right side of the offensive line last year. That should sound familiar to anyone who has followed the Seattle Seahawks. Well, the offensive line was perhaps the single biggest concern for San Francisco during its first three exhibition games. That also should sound familiar for those in Seattle. The 49ers did show progress on offense in their final exhibition game, according to Maiocco.

The change from Mike Singletary to Jim Harbaugh, the 49ers' first-year coach are stark. Barrows explains.
