Seahawks release eight, trim roster to 82
Posted by Danny O'Neil
Corrected version
The Seahawks announced the release of eight players who had been in training camp: WR Chris Carter, CB Jesse Hoffman, LB Neal Howey, OT Zach Hurd, WR Brandon Smith, FB Ryan Travis, DT Teryl White, WR Patrick Williams.
The league requires the Seahawks trim their roster to 80 players by Tuesday. Seattle currently has 82 players on the roster after Monday's moves.
The release of Hoffman deserves a special mention. He played at Shorewoodcrest High School, went to Eastern Washington as a running back and moved to the secondary, first at safety.
He played well at training camp, notably with a nice play in red-zone coverage during th esecond half of Seattle's exhibition game against San Diego.
In Seattle, he found himself playing a position that is suddenly so deep that Seattle found itself trading Kelly Jennings -- last year's starter at right cornerback -- despite the fact that it had not only re-signed Jennings less than a month ago, but paid him a six-figure signing bonus to do so.
The numbers were stacked against Hoffman, but he played well and that performance by a local high-school player deserved more mention than it got on this blog over the past few weeks.
Information in this post, originally published Aug. 29, 2011, was corrected that same day to reflect that he was attended Shorecrest High School as opposed to Shorewood. He was a Scot, not a Thunderbird. The author of this post knew that, even asked Hoffman about it last week. Danny O'Neil is running punishment laps as a result.
