Seahawks kick returner not worried about rule change

Why don't we see more screen passes to Leon Washington?

It was something fans constantly wanted to know last year. It's something I don't think they will be asking as much this year. Not if the past three weeks are any indication. The Seahawks are focused on finding a role for Washington in this offense, which isn't necessarily a challenge, but it will take some work.

"We love what he does," coach Pete Carroll said, "but I just think he needs reps in the zone schemes that we're running and so he can show us where he's special and unique in our stuff."

Washington played extensively in the exhibition opener at San Diego last week with Justin Forsett out because of a strained neck. It sounds like Washington might get a heavy load of work again. The team already has a pretty good idea of what Forsett can do, but finding a distinct role for Washington -- one that doesn't overlap with Forsett -- is clearly a priority for the team this exhibition season.

Running back was one of the only positions on Seattle's roster not affected by the past month. Marshawn Lynch is the starter, someone who very much looks ready to have the kind of season that made him a Pro Bowler in Buffalo early in his career. Fullback Michael Robinson was re-signed, and Forsett and Washington are back as well.

Seattle has not had a 1,000-yard rusher since Shaun Alexander in his MVP season of 2005. Only Detroit has gone as long without a millennium man. Is this the year that changes?

Here's a look at the past nine years and who Seattle kept at the 53-man cutdown:

It might be more informative to list who finished the various seasons. . . .  Posted on August 18, 2011 at 9:25 AM by joblitz. Jump to comment
