Seahawks quarterback Charlie Whitehurst remains a mystery
By Danny O'Neil | The Seattle Times
Quarterback remains the biggest question on this team going forward. That uncertainty, however, does not relate to who will be on the 53-man roster. Well, at least not unless you're focused on whether undrafted rookie Josh Portis will play so well through training camp the Seahawks decide they can't even try to shuffle him onto the practice squad for fear another team will nab him.
Tarvaris Jackson is here as the Week 1 starter. Coach Pete Carroll has made that very clear. Charlie Whitehurst is going to be on this roster, too, and all those grumblings from a certain segment of the Seahawks fanbase are strictly background noise that can be pretty much tuned out. Seattle hasn't given up on him. Not at all.
The only real question about the exact shape of the roster is if Seattle has three quarterbacks on it to begin the season, which is not unprecedented recently. Here's a look at the quarterbacks Seattle kept upon the cutdown to the 53-man roster from 2002 to 2010:
| 2010 | 2009 | 2008 | 2007 | 2006 |
| 2 | 3 | 3 | 2 | 3 |
| Matt Hasselbeck | Hasselbeck | Hasselbeck | Hasselbeck | Hasselbeck |
| Charlie Whitehurst | Seneca Wallace | Wallace | Wallace | Wallace |
| Mike Teel | Charlie Frye | David Greene | ||
| 2005 | 2004 | 2003 | 2002 | |
| 3 | 3 | 3 | 3 | |
| Matt Hasselbeck | Hasselbeck | Hasselbeck | Hasselbeck | |
| Seneca Wallace | Trent Dilfer | Dilfer | Dilfer | |
| David Greene | Seneca Wallace | Wallace | Mark Rypien | |
