Pete Carroll says Russell Okung felt 'something kind of pop'
Posted by Danny O'Neil
SAN DIEGO -- Coach Pete Carroll provided an update on left tackle Russell Okung's status after he left Thursday's exhibition opener in the first quarter.
"Russ has got an ankle sprain," Carroll said. "It was non-contact, you know. Just to hear felt something kind of pop in there. X-rays were negative and all that so we'll see what happens. He's real disappointed."
So is it a high ankle sprain like the ones he suffered last year. His right ankle was injured in August, his left ankle in October.
"It's in that area," Carroll said. "It is in that area. We'll see. They were getting some stuff to check it out further, but he's real disappointed obviously. It wasn't even a contact foul."
The injury occurred at some point in the first four plays of the exhibition game. Okung was not available to answer questions after the game. Carroll was asked what happened on the play that caused the injury."He was setting up and pushing off it," Carroll said. "So that's encouraging, you know. It wasn't somebody fell on it or he got all twisted. But we'll find out. We don't know enough about it. The X-rays were negative that's all I can tell. We'll do all the MRIs and all that stuff in the next days."
So, is Okung just the unluckiest lineman in the world? He has started 13 games -- including exhibition games -- and has left three of them because of ankle injuries.
"I feel very sorry for him that he has to even deal with this tonight," Carroll said. "He has been through so much with all that stuff. The fact that it just happened. He has been practicing beautifully and doing everything full speed and looked great. I can't imagine how that could have happened."
Tyler Polumbus played the remainder of the first half at left tackle, and Will Robinson was at that spot to finish the game. Will Seattle need to explore other contingencies? It's too soon to ask all that, Carroll said.
"We're not ruling out the fact we (could) get him back very quickly," Carroll said.
