Camp Carroll 2.0, Day 11

Posted by Danny O'Neil

RENTON -- Byron Maxwell looked pretty comfortable when the Seahawks tried him as a nickel linebacker during practice Tuesday. Apparently, looks can be deceiving.

"I don't feel comfortable," he said afterward, laughing.

Well, he did a pretty good job fooling everyone watching as he picked off a pass from starting quarterback Tarvaris Jackson during a drill, his second interception in the portion of practice.

Maxwell is a rookie from Clemson that Seattle drafted in the sixth round. He is 6 feet 1, 207 pounds and he is a physical cornerback whose performance has earned him some attention.

"He's been really special the last two or three days now," coach Pete Carroll said. "It was about three days back when he started making things happen. He looks very competitive. He's tough, he's tackled well, he's got a nose for the football, he's really bright, he's really picking it up and he's right in the mix of this with the young corners."

Cornerback is going to be one of the most interesting competitions to watch over the four exhibition games. Marcus Trufant and Walter Thurmond project as the team's starting cornerbacks currently. Thurmond has been out the past week, which has left Kelly Jennings playing with the first-unit defense.

Then there are the rookies Maxwell and Richard Sherman, a fifth-round draft choice out of Stanford. At 6 feet 4, Brandon Browner is the tallest defensive back Seattle has in camp and someone Carroll has praised for the length he brings to his press coverage.

Marcus Brown and Kennard Cox were on the team last year and are back in camp. Roy Lewis, who was Seattle's nickelback and special-teams captain last year, is currently on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list as he continues his recovery from knee surgery.

The secondary is a puzzle the team is trying to fit together, and Maxwell's play this week has served notice that he may fit in nicely wherever the team places him. Even if it's a position he has never played before like weakside linebacker.

"I'm just learning on the fly," Maxwell said. "They just throw me in the fire and see what happens."

(Continue reading for more notes from Tuesday's practice.)

• WR Mike Williams sat out practice because of a toe injury suffered during Monday's practice.

• DE Red Bryant was again out. He has not practiced in more than a week. Is it time to start getting concerned for the player who has undergone two knee surgeries in three NFL seasons?

"He's going to come back ready to go next week, after this game," Carroll said. "I feel like we'll rest him all the way through the game and then these last three days will be enough to get him back."

Carroll emphasized Bryant is not hurt, and there has been an emphasis upon improving his conditioning in the time he has not been practicing.

Bryant is listed at 323 pounds, but said he weighed 335 during an interview the first few days of training camp.

"I'm going to try to get lighter," Bryant said. "That's always a task with me, but hopefully I can get in the '20s."

That would be 320s, mind you.

• DL Kentwan Balmer (stinger) and DL Ryan Sims (knee) also did not practice.

• Rookie WR Kris Durham is not expected to play in Thursday's exhibition game because of a sore hamstring.

"He's had a great start to camp and we're just going to have to wait on him," Carroll said of Durham.
