Report: K Olindo Mare to sign with Carolina
Posted by Danny O'Neil
The Seattle Seahawks are looking for a new kicker, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN, after Olindo Mare agreed to sign elsewhere.
Mare's agent, when reached by phone Wednesday morning, said he was not able to talk.
Mare's destination was unknown, but his departure isn't a total shock considering the Seahawks chose not to use the franchise tag on him as they had in 2010.
Mare went more than a year without missing a field goal for Seattle, a streak that spanned a franchise-record 30 attempts and lasted from September 2009 to Oct. 31, 2010.
Mare, 38, made 73 of the 83 field goals he attempted in his three seasons in Seattle, the highest percentage of any kicker in franchise history with a minimum of 25 career attempts. He matched the franchsie record for field goals in a game twice last season, making five kicks in each of Seattle's two games against Arizona.
But when Seattle opted not to apply the franchise tag to Mare back in February, it demonstrated the Seahawks' reluctance to pony up a raise to bring back Mare one more season.
Update: Mare is headed to Carolina, according to Jason LaCanfora of the NFL Network, who reported it is a four-year contract totaling $12 million, $4 million of which is to be paid up front.
The Seahawks have an agreement with Wes Byrum, kicker from Auburn, his agent confirmed. Byrum set Auburn's all-time scoring record last October. His game-winning field goal in the BCS title game against Oregon was the 363rd field goal of his college career, fifth most in SEC history.
