Seahawks plan to release OL Stacy Andrews

The Seahawks have informed offensive lineman Stacy Andrews that they intend to release him later this week. Andrews was acquired from the Philadelphia Eagles last year eight days before the regular-season began. The Seahawks intended for him to play right tackle, but an injury to Max Unger forced him into a role as the starting left guard.
Andrews appeared in 13 games for the Seahawks, starting 12 of them. He was replaced as the starting right guard for the final three games of the season.
NFL teams can not make transactions until Friday, but Andrews was informed Monday the Seahawks intend to release him.
Andrews was scheduled to make more than $5 million this season. Coach Pete Carroll indicated after the season that Seattle saw him as more of a natural tackle as opposed to guard. Seattle drafted James Carpenter of Alabama in the first round of last April's draft, and indicated afterward he would be the starter.
Andrews' success in the NFL is remarkable considering he went to Ole Miss as a track athlete, and didn't play football until his senior. Originally a fourth-round pick, Andrews was designated as Cincinnati's franchise player in 2008, and played that season after signing a one-year tender for more than $7 million. He suffered a torn knee ligament toward the end of that season and went to the Eagles in 2009.
Originally signed by Philadelphia to play tackle, he agreed to move inside, to make room for Shawn though because of injury the two never played together.
Andrews was traded to Seattle eight days before the regular-season opener, the Seahawks acquiring him for a seventh-round draft pick.
