Pete Carroll on Darrell Bevell: 'A great fit for us.'

Posted by Danny O'Neil

MOBILE, Al. -- Pete Carroll arrived in town for the Senior Bowl on Monday, but attendance wasn't mandatory for the Seahawks coaches.

Now, that's not entirely unsual, especially considering the Seahawks extended their season with two additional playoff games. Some head coaches -- such as San Francisco's Jim Harbaugh -- aren't present, either.

Carroll's presence offered an opportunity to get his comments on the hiring of Darrell Bevell, who was added as offensive coordinator last week.

Bevell is known as a quiet, even-tempered coach who served as Minnesota's offensive coordinator the past six seasons.

"He called it a really good balanced offense that I like, the way they've done it," Carroll said. "A lot of experience with overseeing the quarterback position with great players."

That offense is going to include a running game guided by Tom Cable, the new offensive line coach. Carroll said Bevell's background is very similar.

"The scheme that he has been in is one that connects perfectly with Tom," Carroll said. "They have the same background, schematically and all that, so they'll have harmony from the beginning, communications and terminology and all that kind of stuff. He's aggressive, his mentality about how he likes to go after it and call plays. I think he's a great fit for us."

As for the remaining vacancy on Seattle's coaching staff, many expect Carl Smith to become the Seahawks next quarterbacks coach, but that's not official nor finalized. Smith is a long-time NFL assistant who was Jacksonville's offensive coordinator in 2005 and 2006. He has been the Browns quarterbacks coach the past two seasons.

Smith has a history with Carroll, having served as USC's quarterbacks coach in 2004, the year Matt Leinart won the Heisman Trophy.
