Precedent for losing teams in the playoffs
Posted by Danny O'Neil
If the Seahawks win Sunday's game against St. Louis, they would be the first team to win a division with a losing record. They wouldn't be the first team to make the playoffs, though. In the strike-shortened season of 1982, the playoff format was changed with division affiliations forgotten entirely and the top eight teams from each conference qualifying. The result was that two teams reached the postseason at 4-5: Detroit and Cleveland. No team with a losing record has reached the postseason since then.
