Seahawks' playoff update: Chargers 34, 49ers 7

Posted by Danny O'Neil

The Seahawks' playoff hopes were helped Thursday night when the 49ers lost 34-7 at San Diego.

The 49ers are now a game and a half back. If Seattle wins one of its next two games and then beats the St. Louis Rams in the regular-season finale, the Seahawks are now assured of a playoff berth.

So here are Seattle's playoff possibilities spelled out by decreasing level of difficulty.

If the Seahawks finish 9-7 ...
They're in. No ifs ands or buts.

If the Seahawks finish 8-8 ...
Are guaranteed a playoff berth provided one of those two victories are over the Rams in the regular-season finale. If Seattle were to beat the Falcons and Bucs and then lose to the Rams, the Seahawks would need St. Louis to lose to either Kansas City or San Francisco to earn a playoff berth.

If the Seahawks finish 7-9 ...
Seattle makes the playoffs provided: a) The Seahawks beat St. Louis in Week 17. This is non-negotiable. Seattle must beat the Rams; b) St. Louis must lose to either Kansas City or San Francisco in addition to losing at Seattle in Week 17, and; c) 49ers must lose one of the next two games, which are against St. Louis and Arizona.
