Ben Obomanu playing catch-up
Posted by Danny O'Neil
RENTON -- Ben Obomanu is not sure how many stitches it took to close up the cut on his right hand.
He's more concerned with how he's going to adjust to catching the ball in spite of those stitches.
"You just have to adapt a little bit," he said after Wednesday's practice. "The thing about receiver is you want to be able to catch the ball naturally. But at the same time, I'm trying to adjust and figure out some things. It's a day-by-day thing, and hopefully by the end of the week, I'll be comfortable with some kind of way to make it work to help the team out Sunday."
Both Obomanu and Mike Williams practiced on Wednesday, though Obomanu's number of receptions was limited because the team wants to give his hand more time to heal.
So what are the adjustments that Obomanu is making?
"The adjustment is pretty much playing with something on my hands," Obomanu said. "I personally like no tape on my fingers, no tape on my wrists or anything, but I'm going to have to do a lot of tape, experiment devices and things to make sure, I have to protect my hand number one, but still give me comfort to be able to catch the ball, too. It's figuring out things from today, figuring out things after practice. It's an ongoing thing. Even when I'm at home, I'm still trying to figure out the best way to make it work."
Obomanu had not started a game in the NFL until Nov. 14 this season when he was the first-team flanker at Arizona. he caught four passes for 60 yards that game, and he had 16 catches for 346 yards in his four starts this season. He missed last week's game after suffering a laceration to his right hand in the second quarter of Seattle's victory over Carolina.
Update, Dec. 16, 2010: An earlier version of this chart mistakenly listed Ben Obomanu under the headings of "Did not practice" and "Full practice." Obomanu practiced Wednesday:
