Seahawks cut Jordan Babineaux, reportedly Julius Jones, too
Posted by Danny O'Neil
He made two very memorable plays during Seattle's run of four consecutive division titles, intercepting a pass from Drew Bledsoe -- then with Dallas -- in 2005 to set up a last-minute game-winning field goal. He also tackled Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo from behind to prevent a two-point conversation in a 2007 playoff game.
Babineaux's release was first reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter and subsequently confirmed indepdently.
Schefter also reported the Seahawks cut running back Julius Jones.
It continues the overhaul of a roster that continues to turn over the roster, putting youth in front of players with starting experience.
Both Jones and Babineaux had contracts that called for them to make more than $2 million this season. As vested veterans, both would have had those salaries guaranteed if they had been on the roster in Week 1. Babineaux began his Seahawks career as a cornerback, playing specifically in nickel situations. He became a starting safety last season. Cutting him means Seattle will go into the season with Earl Thomas and Lawyer Milloy the starting safeties, Kam Chancellor and Kevin Ellison the backups.
Jones played two seasons in Seattle after he was signed as a free agent in 2008. He was benched toward the end of that season after he had trouble fumbling.
He started 14 games last season and led the team in rushing with 663 yards. Seattle had seven offensive plays all year that gained more than 40 yards from the line of scrimmage. Jones was responsible for two of them.
His departure leaves Seattle with Justin Forsett, Leon Washington and Quinton Ganther as the running backs with Owen Schmitt at fullback.
