Report: Alex Gibbs, Seahawks offensive line coach, retired
Posted by Danny O'Neil
Gibbs' departure was confirmed independently, and formally announced by the team Saturday evening.
"We wish Alex the best in his retirement," Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said in a statement. "We're grateful for the time we had with him and we're all better for it."
Gibbs was considered one of the key additions to Carroll's staff, someone considered an expert in implementing the zone-blocking system.
Though Gibbs and offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates shared a background in Denver working under Mike Shanahan, they had not worked together on the same staff before. Gibbs left, going to Atlanta in 2004, before Bates was hired by the Broncos.
Gibbs was hired by Seattle this offseason, leaving the Houston Texans coaching staff. He had not worked under Carroll before though he had helped more informally when USC installed a similar system.
Mike Solari was previously the Seahawks offensive line coach, and he was offered a position on Carroll's staff as tight ends coach. He turned that down, and is now the offensive line coach for San Francisco.
Update: It needs to be pointed out that the initial indication I had regarding tension within the coaching staff has not been corroborated by others I've talked to. It's important to emphasis that fact because the original entry on this blog stated, "It's believed there was tension within the offensive coaching staff." Subsequent reporting contradicted that statement so I removed it from the blog entry. I don't want it to just disappear, though, and make it look like it was covered up. I want to provide fuller information.
Gibbs is a coach in his late 60s who has previously left jobs, citing the fatigue. And while there will still be questions about why he left so suddenly, it's important to emphasize that the explanation offered by the team is the one that has been echoed by others.
