Pertinent notes on Josh Wilson and Leroy Hill
Posted by Danny O'Neil
A few points of interest concerning Seattle's more noteworthy transactions:
• Josh Wilson is 5 feet 9, and as Greg Bedard of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel pointed out stands in opposition to a fundamental tenet of the Ron Wolf/Ted Thompson school of football personnel, which is, 'Thou shalt not draft cornerbacks shorter than 5-10.'
Actually, as Bedard pointed out, Thompson has never drafted a corner shorter than 5-11.
For the record, while Kelly Jennings is slender enough to be nicknamed "Slim" as a rookie, he is listed at 5-11.
• Leroy Hill's new contract calls for him to make $2.125 million in base salary this season. Of that total, $2 million is guaranteed against skill and injury and that guarantee will not be affected by either his suspension for the season-opener or any further discipline levied by the league stemming from his April arrest.
He will also receive a bonus for each week he is on the 53-man roster, and there are are also incentives based upon playing time. Those incentives are broken down into four tiers with a total maximum value of $1.125 million.
The upshot is Hill has a good chance to earn half of the $6 million that his original contract called for him to make.
There has been some discussion about this being a sacrifice on Hill's part. In reality, the negotiation on a new deal made the best of a situation in which Hill faced the distinct possibility of being cut without receiving any of that $6 million the contract he signed in 2009 called for him to receive.
Under the original deal, if Hill were to be disciplined by the league for the incident that resulted in his April arrest -- something that is considered likely given precedents in similar cases -- Seattle would have cut him without owing him a thing for the upcoming season.
Now, Hill has a level of security going forward into the season and the carrot of pending free agency to chase.
Seattle obviously still sees value in Hill, which is why it was willing to negotiate a new contract to keep him.
