Ray Willis needs knee surgery

Posted by Danny O'Neil

• Tackle Ray Willis needs surgery on his knee because of a cartilage issue, according to coach Pete Carroll. Carroll said it's not necessarily a season-ending surgery, more of an arthroscopic procedure, but Willis is not expected to be available for the season-opener.

Willis was competing at right tackle, and his departure leaves Joe Toledo and Mansfield Wrotto the two back-up tackles to starters Russell Okung and Sean Locklear.

T.J. Houshmandzadeh was not at practice because he was tending to a personal matter, according to Carroll. Houshmandzadeh's absence was excused.

Kentwan Balmer was not at practice, but is expected to arrive at the team headquarters Monday evening. The team has not made a roster move to add him officially as he will have to pass a physical examination first.
