Report: Seahawks acquire Kentwan Balmer, DL
Posted by Danny O'Neil
Balmer was chosen in the first round of the 2008 draft, picked immediately after Seattle chose Lawrence Jackson of USC. Balmer had been absent from the 49ers' training camp the past week.
There was no report of what Seattle gave up to acquire Balmer, and the Seahawks have not announced the transaction.
The Seahawks do have some insight into Balmer. Scot McCloughan was 49ers general manager when San Francisco selected Balmer. McCloughan is now a senior personnel executive with Seattle.

So what is Seattle's plan? We'll have to wait and see, but defensive line -- and defensive end in particular -- is a unit where Seattle needs more depth. Balmer is a potentially versatile lineman, and while he hasn't started a game in his two years in San Francisco, he projects as a five-technique in Seattle. That's the spot where Red Bryant is currently the starter.
While Balmer has played two seasons in the league, it's important to remember the guy is only 23 years old, and he will be moving from the 3-4 scheme the 49ers play to a defense based on the principles of the 4-3.
Update at Noon: Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com has reported the Seahawks traded a sixth-round draft pick to the 49ers for Balmer.
