Beautiful afternoon in Renton to watch practice. Monday is the last day training camp is open to fans.

The biggest news of the day is the signing of running back Adrian Peterson (below), who played last season with the Chicago Bears. Of course, he gets confused with the Minnesota Vikings star, but this Peterson has 3,201 fewer career yards and five more years (eight total) experience.

Peterson is wearing No. 42 for Seattle.

The Seahawks brought in Peterson because they're a little thin at running back due to Leon Washington recovering from a broken leg and Louis Rankin being slowed by a hamstring injury. To make room for Peterson on the 80-man roster, Seattle released WR Matt Simon.

Peterson saw work at practice with the No. 2 unit and scout team.

"(GM) John (Schneider) knew something about about him over the years. He's been a very solid special teams player," coach Pete Carroll said. "We needed a little depth at running back right now. We're out here testing Louis Rankin to see if he can go, see if he can play Saturday night. It's a chance for Adrian, he's going to get an opportunity to do some stuff in the game this week. He's going to play."

--- The Seahawks are also limited at linebacker largely because Lofa Tatupu continues to be bothered by a hamstring injury and Leroy Hill has a sprained knee and will miss the next few weeks.

Losing Hill is fairly significant. David Hawthorne will get more playing time because of their absence.

--- After practice, Carroll gathered at the far end of the field with a trainer and watched WR Kole Heckendorf, DE Lawrence Jackson, Tatupu and Rankin run conditioning drills. Carroll said he's unsure if they'll play against Tennessee on Saturday in Seattle's first preseason game.

--- Speaking of Saturday, it's Carroll's first NFL since Jan. 2, 2000 when he left New England. He didn't give away many details about Seattle's plan as it pertains to the how long the starters will play. Carroll said: "It's important for me to make the transition," and talked about being excited see the stadium crowd.

Carroll did reveal defensive coordinator Gus Bradley will call the defensive plays.

--- There's a concerted effort by the Seahawks to limit quarterback Matt Hasselbeck's reps in training camp to "keep him as strong as possible," Carroll said.

Said Carroll: "He's had a great camp to this point. All of his offseason is adding up. You can see the benefits of it by the way he can handle himself physically."

"He's going to play a lot in the game and we'll see how he does," Carroll added.

--- The battle at receiver s one of the most competitive in training camp. Carroll said: "I'm really, really in love with what Deion Branch is bringing us. He's got a real style to him that's unique and quick and he can catch everything. He understands the game and he and Matt are really hitting it off well. Learning how to work with one another probably in a more direction fashion as before."

--- Several receiver made acrobatic catches that thrilled a sun-drenched afternoon crowd. Ben Obomanu got things going when he snared a pass from Charlie Whitehurst in traffic. Rookie Golden Tate seems to make at least one eye-popping catch each day and during a team drill he raced behind Kelly Jennings, Earl Thomas and Lawyer Milloy reeled in a long throw from J.P. Losman.

Still the catch of the day came from Branch who made a one-handed grab against tight coverage on a pass from Hassebeck.
