Camp Carroll: Day 12
Posted by Danny O'Neil
One practice | Full pads
So who's Seattle's back-up kicker? Well, turns out that it's punter Jon Ryan, who's got plenty of leg. It was just his accuracy that left a little bit to be desired as he missed a field-goal attempt to the left to conclude practice.
Kicker Olindo Mare sat out his second consecutive practice with a sore calf.
Ryan's field-goal attempt came at the end of a two-minute drill. The first-team offense had the ball, the score was tied. Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck had the offense moving, pushing past midfield. It was first-and-10 at the opponent's 40 with 1 minute remaining.
An incompletion intended for T.J. Houshmandzadeh -- well defended by rookie Walter Thurmond -- a 5-yard gain and then a 5-yard penalty for false start and it was third-and-10. Hasselbeck completed the pass to Deion Branch, but it was 1 yard short of the first down. Enter Ryan, who missed the field-goal attempt. In Ryan's defense, though, he made the practice-ending attempt on Tuesday.
• The almost-play-of-the-day goes to Ruvell Martin. He made a sliding catch along the sidelines before rookie safety Earl Thomas could close to make the play. The pass was well thrown by Charlie Whitehurst, but just a little wide. Martin caught the ball out of bounds after his knee touched out of bounds.
• Over the offseason workouts, rookie Anthony McCoy looked like the steal of Seattle's draft. Well, in training camp, he's struggled at times to catch the ball, and he had what can only be characterized as an absolutely terrible drop. Later in the practice, though, McCoy ran a great route against Aaron Curry to get open.
The competition for the third tight end will be one to watch as Cameron Morrah and McCoy battle for that slot.
• The defense excelled in Tuesday's practice, intercepting three passes. Cornerback Josh Wilson had one Wednesday, when he outran Houshmandzadeh to pick off a deep lob by Houshmandzadeh Whitehurst.
• Whitehurst's most impressive completion of the day went to Mike Hass who is on his second stint with the Seahawks this training camp. He got inside of Marcus Trufant on a deep slant.
