Seahawks acquire Leon Washington from New York Jets

Posted by Danny O'Neil

The Seattle Seahawks acquired Leon Washington from the New York Jets, trading the second of their two fifth-round picks (No. 139) to New York for Washington and a seventh-round pick, No. 236.

Washington is a versatile back, someone who caught 47 passes in 2008 and is among the league's most dangerous kick returners. Washington was a restricted free agent this offseason before signing a one-year qualifying offer with New York.

What will this mean for Julius Jones? That's a fair question.

It's clear Seattle is looking to upgrade the players it has at running back, but instead of the draft, it is turning to veteran backs who are at the end of their tenure with previous teams.

Seattle acquired LenDale White from the Titans earlier Saturday, and now adds Washington. The Seahawks gave up very little to acquire White, sliding down seven spots in the fourth round and nine spots in the sixth to pick him up.

The sacrifice of Washington was only a little more significant as Seattle traded away a fifth-round pick, but also picked up a seventh. Washington played seven games last season before suffering a broken leg, which landed him on injured reserve.

The Jets made Washington a restricted free agent this offseason, giving him a one-year qualifying offer of $1.759 million, which entitled the Jets to second-round compensation should he leave to sign elsewhere. He signed his one-year offer.
