Seahawks add punter Tom Malone
Posted by Danny O'Neil
Punter Tom Malone signed with the Seahawks, according to his agent.
Malone attended USC beginning in 2002, punting for Pete Carroll, who is now the Seahawks coach.
Malone has twice competed for an NFL roster spot first with the San Francisco 49ers and later the New England Patriots. He has not punted in a regular-season NFL game, though.
Seattle already has a punter in place in Jon Ryan, who was signed to a new contract immediately after the season. Ryan received a signing bonus of more than $1 million, which doesn't translate to a guarantee of a roster spot, but certainly constitutes Seattle's vote of confidence in his ability.
Malone is the third specialist Seattle has added in the past week. The Seahawks signed long-snappers Matt Overton and Pat MacDonald last week.
Seattle also signed defensive end Ricky Foley from the Canadian Football League, according to his agent. Foley led the CFL with 12 sacks last season.
Foley attended York University, which is near Toronto. He was chosen No. 4 overall by the B.C. Lions in the CFL Draft in 2006.
He also tried out for the Baltimore Ravens that year and was signed, but he didn't make it to training camp. He was released by the team in June.
