Discussing the finer points of non-linear algebra with Owen Schmitt

Posted by Danny O'Neil

Just kidding. No discussion of higher math here. It's more like a new program called, "Helmet: Friend or Enemy?" It was going to be a point-counterpoint style debate. The problem was it's hard to think of any good reason to slam your helmet into your own head.

But in the spirit of finding out just what went on, we asked Schmitt to take us through those moments before Sunday's game when he cracked his noggin' open with his helmet.

"Well, when it was happening, I didn't know," Schmitt said. "I just did the three smacks and I ran out to the offense. Then I put my helmet, and I was like, 'Oh, I guess I seem to be bleeding.' "

Yep. Bleeding a lot in fact. He looked like a pro wrestler donning the crimson mask.

Q: Has it ever happened before where you've started bleeding?

"No," Schmitt said.

But you've smacked yourself with your helmet before, right?

"I've kind of done that for a while now," Schmitt said.

And at this point of the conversation, running back Julius Jones chimed in.

"A star is born," Jones said.

"It's something I do," Schmitt said.

Does it motivate you?

"It gets me fired me up," Schmitt said. "Just something I've done. I don't know why."

Notice that he said, done, as in past tense. He won't be doing it again before this week's game.

"That has been cut out of the pre-game ritual," Schmitt said.
