Report: Seahawks have released Brian Russell

Posted by Danny O'Neil

Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network is reporting the Seahawks have released Brian Russell.

Seahawks to release Brian Russell
By Jason La Canfora, NFL Network

The Seahawks have released safety Brian Russell, league sources told NFL Network's Jason La Canfora.

Russell, a seven-year veteran, has started 32 consecutive games for the Seahawks since joining the team in 2007. Over that span, he tallied 140 tackles, two sacks and one interception.

Russell played two seasons with the Seahawks, starting every game. His subtraction would coincide with the report that all the rookies -- including Courtney Greene -- would make the Seahawks. Initially, it appeared that might endanger C.J. Wallace's status. If the league's own television station is to be believed, it was a little higher on the depth chart.

Jordan Babineaux competed with Russell for playing time at free safety during the offseason minicamps, but Russell had been the first-team free safety throughout training camp.

According the NFL Players Association records, Russell was scheduled to make $2.1 million in 2009.A special note to Tom Page and jstiles2000, the e-migos who get credited with the assist. I hadn't seen the report before they posted it.
