C Chris Spencer suffers torn left quadriceps

Center Chris Spencer has suffered a second-degree tear of his left quadriceps and is expected to be out four to six weeks.
Spencer suffered the injury at the end of the second quarter in Saturday's exhibition game against Denver. The fact Spencer's injury will likely force him to miss the start of the regular season was first disclosed by coach Jim Mora during an interview with Mitch Levy on KJR-AM on Monday morning.
Spencer is Seattle's starting center, a first-round draft pick in 2005 whom coach Mike Holmgren described as a future Pro Bowl player. Injuries have prevented Spencer from fulfilling that potential. He underwent shoulder surgery after the 2006 season, and suffered from a back problem that landed him on injured reserve in 2008.
With Spencer out, the Seahawks will face a choice at center. Steve Vallos is a third-year player who became the starting center after Spencer's injury last season. Seattle also drafted Max Unger of Oregon in the second round. He played center his junior and senior seasons in college, and Unger has been challenging for a starting spot at right guard. Will the Seahawks move him to center now with Spencer out and go with Mansfield Wrotto at right guard? It's something worth watching.
