PHOENIX – The matchup of the best two teams in the league came down to the final seconds and Diana Taurasi delivered for Phoenix.

Taurasi, who on Friday signed a multiyear extension with her only WNBA team, made a 20-footer with 2.9 seconds left and teammate Brittney Griner blocked a last-second layup attempt by Minnesota’s Lindsay Whalen to lift the Mercury over the Lynx 82-80 on Saturday, snapping the defending champions’ winning streak at 11 games.

“It was kind of a simple play,” Taurasi said. “There wasn’t much time left, so it was kind of get the best shot and hopefully it went in. And today it did, so there were a lot of plays that led up to that that really kept us in the game.”

Mercury coach Sandy Brondello said of Taurasi: “That’s why she is the best player in the world. She responded tonight and made big plays when we needed them.”

Phoenix (26-4) needs one victory or a loss by Minnesota (24-7) to secure home-court advantage throughout the playoffs.

Taurasi scored 24 points and Griner had 19 points and 11 rebounds before a crowd of 12,379.

Maya Moore led Minnesota with 30 points, including a basket with 7.9 seconds left that tied the score at 80.
