How the NFC West fared on Day 1 of the NFL draft

A look at who the Rams, Cardinals and 49ers selected in the first round on Thursday.

St. Louis Rams

On paper, the Rams had the best first day. Robinson gives Rams QB Sam Bradford some assurance and will help St. Louis control the line of scrimmage in the rugged NFC West. And Donald bolsters an already fierce defensive line that could be the best in the league.

Arizona Cardinals

The Cardinals needed help at safety, particularly a bigger safety who could hit. Bucannon provides exactly that. He’s a physical player who should complement Tyrann Mathieu and the rest of Arizona’s secondary nicely. Plus, the Cardinals picked up a third-round pick by trading down from 20 to 27.

San Francisco 49ers

Most people had the 49ers drafting a wide receiver or a cornerback, two positions of need. So it was surprising when the 49ers went with Ward, a ball-hawking free safety. The 49ers drafted safety Eric Reid in the first round last year and signed safety Antoine Bethea this offseason. But Jon Gruden speculated on ESPN that Ward (5-11, 193) could also play corner.
