WASHINGTON — The contrast couldn’t have been greater for DeSean Jackson.

In a matter of days, he went from unwanted to wanted, from fired to hired, from discarded by the Philadelphia Eagles with reputation tarnished to rock-star treatment and a new fat contract from the Washington Redskins.

Concerns about work ethic, attitude and reports about gang activity seemed miles away when he was being wooed by Robert Griffin III or enjoying his recruiting-style evening out with cornerback DeAngelo Hall, receiver Pierre Garcon and rapper Wale.

On Wednesday, Jackson closed the deal, signing a $24 million, three-year contract that includes $16 million guaranteed.

“I feel they embraced me,” Jackson said. “RG3, DeAngelo Hall reached out to me and made it feel like it was home. After everything that was going on the past couple of days, and the last week, that’s a big step. ... I think the biggest thing about this move is finding a place where I can be happy.”

While welcoming Jackson, Griffin said he would not be giving up his jersey number (10).

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Jadeveon Clowney believes he’s the NFL’s No. 1 draft pick and says he took a big step toward that goal during South Carolina’s pro-day workouts.

The 6-foot-5, 266-pound defensive end did position drills in front of dozens of NFL personnel, including Houston coach Bill O’Brien and Jacksonville coach Gus Bradley. And Clowney thinks he elevated his already elite status during the 40 minutes or so of running through cones, jumping over hurdles and catching tennis balls in workouts he passed on at the NFL combine in February.

Notes

• The Tennessee Titans agreed to terms with offensive lineman Chris Spencer on a one-year contract. Spencer, 32, was a first-round draft pick of the Seahawks in 2005 and played in Seattle through 2010.

• Former Miami Hurricanes offensive lineman Jason Fox signed a one-year contract with the Miami Dolphins.

• The Pittsburgh Steelers and free-agent wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey agreed to terms on a one-year contract.

• The New York Giants signed former Denver defensive end Robert Ayers. He had 5.5 sacks last season for the Broncos.
