NEW YORK – Safety Dashon Goldson of Tampa Bay has been suspended for one game for flagrant and repeat violations of league safety rules prohibiting hits to the head and neck area of defenseless players.

Goldson, a former Washington Huskies standout, was penalized for unnecessary roughness in Sunday’s game against New Orleans for making direct, helmet-to-helmet contact with a defenseless pass receiver, Darren Sproles.

Goldson, an All-Pro who played for San Francisco before this season, has had 11 penalties for unnecessary roughness since the start of 2010. He was fined $30,000 last week for striking defenseless Jeff Cumberland of the New York Jets in the head and neck area.

The suspension, which will cost Goldson $264,705 in salary, was imposed Monday by Merton Hanks, a league executive and former safety for the 49ers and Seahawks.

Tampa Bay leads the league in yards penalized with 220.

After Sunday’s game, Goldson said, “We’re not worried about those penalties, man, we’re really not. That’s football. You can’t worry about penalties.”

Notes

• All-Pro left tackle Ryan Clady hurt his left foot late in Denver’s 41-23 victory over the New York Giants on Sunday, and might miss a game for the first time in his six-year pro career.

Coach John Fox declined to speculate on the seriousness of the injury, but The Denver Post reported Clady will miss “significant time” and added the “worst-case scenario of season-ending injured reserve is a possibility.”

• The CBS “national-window” game — which was Broncos-Giants in most markets — earned a 17.8 overnight rating. It is the highest preliminary rating for CBS’s first national-window game of the season since the network reacquired NFL rights in 1998.

• Coach Jeff Fisher said officiating mistakes were the biggest reason St. Louis (1-1) was defeated Sunday. The Rams had seven penalties for 53 yards in a 31-24 loss at Atlanta.

After reviewing video, Fisher said only two penalties whistled by Scott Green’s crew should have been called.
