Wide receiver Stephen Williams left after the Seahawks’ second play from scrimmage in Thursday’s game against Oakland with a concussion. It came after he went up and caught a 50-yard pass from Russell Wilson.

But Williams hit his head on the landing and got up gingerly after the play, then headed to the locker room shortly after.

Williams, 27, looks in solid position to make the roster, especially with the way coach Pete Carroll sounded when looking ahead to next Sunday’s season opener at Carolina.

“We just were very cautious with him with 10 days until we go,” Carroll said. “Hopefully he will be all right.”

Michael Bowie, a seventh-round pick fighting for a roster spot on the offensive line, left in the first half with a shoulder injury. Carroll said the injury “might be more serious than we hope.”

Offensive lineman Alvin Bailey (ankle) and defensive lineman Michael Brooks (pinky) were also injured.

Miller, Carpenter see first action

Guard James Carpenter and tight end Zach Miller, two potential starters, played in their first preseason game.

Carpenter, who played significantly at left guard with the second-team offense, said he needs to continue getting fit before next Sunday’s opener.

“It’s been about a year since I played,” Carpenter said, “so I had to get adjusted to it. But it came pretty quick.”

A first-round pick in 2011 who has been injured often, Carpenter returned to practice this week after not practicing since the beginning of August because of a foot injury.

Miller played a handful of plays before the first-team offense exited after one series. Miller was out with a foot injury, returning to practice last week.

Irvin feels ‘natural’

Bruce Irvin played extensively for the first time this preseason at outside linebacker. Irvin is making the transition from defensive end but was sidelined for much of the preseason with a groin injury.

“It was natural,” he said. “I think I’m a great athlete. Once I learned my position and learned the basics of it, everything just fell into place.”

Irvin will serve a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing substances.

“I’m about to go to a very dark place, a dark cave,” Irvin said. “Nobody’s going to know where I’m at. No tweeting. No Instagram. And I’m about to just work my butt off.”

Notes

• Players who didn’t play: WR Sidney Rice, RB Marshawn Lynch, FB Michael Robinson, DE Cliff Avril, DL Michael Bennett, DE Chris Clemons, DT Brandon Mebane, DT Jordan Hill, DT Tony McDaniel, CB Antoine Winfield.
