Eagles coach Kelly names Vick starting QB
Michael Vick was named starting quarterback of the Philadelphia Eagles by first-year coach Chip Kelly, a former Oregon coach.

PHILADELPHIA – With his first chance to put his stamp on Philadelphia’s offense, first-year coach Chip Kelly named Michael Vick the Eagles’ starting quarterback on Tuesday, giving the 33-year-old the nod over Nick Foles after a sterling effort in the exhibition season.
“He’s our starter for the season,” ex-Oregon coach Kelly said of Vick. “It’s not a one-game trial basis.”
Rookie Matt Barkley from USC is the No. 3 quarterback.
Of his starting role, Vick said, “I’m not surprised at all. I told (Kelly), ‘Thank you, I appreciate it and I won’t let you down.’ ”
Other players who were named starters by their coaches include Cleveland quarterback Brandon Weeden and St. Louis running back Daryl Richardson.
Miller to miss 6 games
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. – All-Pro linebacker Von Miller of the Denver Broncos received a six-game suspension under the league’s substance-abuse policy, taking away the best defensive player from a team many observers expect to make a run at the Super Bowl.
John Elway, Broncos executive vice president, said the team was frustrated with what happened “and, I think, disappointed in Von.”
The suspension, without pay, will cost Miller more than $800,000. He will be eligible to play in an Oct. 20 game at Indianapolis.
After being notified of the suspension, Miller released a statement saying, “although my suspension doesn’t result from a positive test, there is no excuse for my violations of the rules.”
• A .38-caliber pistol seized after a June 21 car crash in Springfield, Mass., involving a woman from Bristol, Conn., is part of an investigation into a case involving Aaron Hernandez, a law-enforcement source told The Hartford Courant.
The source did not specify which case the gun is part of, but authorities are investigating the former New England tight end in connection with a July 2012 double homicide in Boston after they found a car, rented in Hernandez’s name, that matched the description of the vehicle sought in connection with that case, the newspaper reported.
Hernandez, 23, who grew up in Bristol, has been charged with murder in the June 17 shooting death of semipro player Odin Lloyd, 27. The weapon used in that incident, which authorities say is a .45-caliber Glock pistol, has not been recovered.
• Carolina running back Jonathan Stewart, a former standout at Timberline High School in Lacey, is recovering from surgery on both ankles and has yet to practice with the Panthers at camp.
Coach Ron Rivera isn’t ruling out the possibility of putting Stewart, 26, on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.
If that happens, Stewart would miss at least the first six weeks of the season.
• Miami tight end Dustin Keller, 28, is out for the season because of a severe right-knee injury. The Dolphins reportedly released cornerback Richard Marshall, 28, who started four games last season.
