CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Running back Jonathan Stewart, a graduate of Timberline High School in Lacey, signed a five-year contract extension with the Carolina Panthers on Saturday.

Ben Dogra, Stewart's agent, said the deal is worth $36.5 million and could rise to $42.5 million, with $22.5 million in guaranteed money.

Stewart, a 25-year-old who played college ball at Oregon, would have been eligible for free agency at the end of the season.

Dogra said the contract is structured as a four-year deal with a team option for a fifth year. Stewart receives $9 million for signing and there is a $9 million option bonus the Panthers must exercise in the spring of 2014, Dogra said.

"There is no other place that I would rather be," said Stewart, a first-round draft pick in 2008 who has rushed for 3,500 yards and averaged 4.8 yards per carry as a pro.

In the exhibition opener for both teams Saturday, the host Panthers lost 26-13 to the Houston Texans.

Johnson is arrested

DAVIE, Fla. — Police say Miami Dolphins receiver Chad Johnson has been arrested on a domestic-violence charge, accused of head-butting his newlywed wife during an argument in front of their home.

Davie police Capt. Dale Engle said Johnson and his wife were at dinner Saturday and she confronted him on the way home about a receipt for a box of condoms she found in the car.

Johnson's wife, Evelyn Lozada, is on the reality TV show "Basketball Wives" on VH1 and the couple married last month.

Lozada was formerly engaged to Antoine Walker, an NBA player from 1996 to 2008.

Engle told The Miami Herald that Lozada "has a pretty good-sized laceration on her forehead."

Engle said Johnson, 34, is in the Broward County Jail.

• Green Bay linebacker Desmond Bishop needs surgery on his injured right hamstring, and coach Mike McCarthy said his season is in jeopardy. Bishop was injured in an exhibition game Thursday.
