RENTON — Guard John Moffitt is likely to undergo surgery to remove particles in his left elbow, which were causing pain.
He is out for Saturday's exhibition game against the Tennessee Titans, and is likely to miss two or three weeks recovering before being ready for the start of the regular season.
"It wasn't really an injury, but kind of a situation over time," coach Pete Carroll said. "It showed up this week so we're going to likely get him worked on and fixed as fast as possible."
Deuce Lutui will start at right guard in Moffitt's place Saturday with rookies Rishaw Johnson and J.R. Sweezy playing behind him.
Moffitt is in his second season with the Seahawks after being chosen in the third round out of Wisconsin. He started the first nine games last season before suffering a season-ending knee injury against the Ravens.
Carroll was asked if he's worried Moffitt won't be recovered in time for the regular-season opener at Arizona on Sept. 9.
"Not at this point," Carroll said. "We just have to take care of business."
Moffitt left practice Thursday during individual drills and did not return. He was on the field as an observer for the team's walk through Friday, wearing a sling the second half of practice.
As for Lutui?
"He's huge," Carroll said. "He's experienced. He's a tough guy. He's picking things up. A little different style of offense in the running than he has been accustomed to. ... But I'm anxious to see how he does. His attitude that he brings, and his experience, would really be nice to have on our line."
Notes
• WR Terrell Owens will not play in Saturday's exhibition game, Carroll said. "He hasn't been here long enough to get out there."
• Also out for Saturday's exhibition game: WR Doug Baldwin (hamstring), WR Ricardo Lockette (inflamed leg) and WR Sidney Rice (shoulders). LB Barrett Ruud is doubtful after missing Friday's practice because of a sore knee.
• Marshawn Lynch won't get much work, and may not play at all. "Marshawn will not get a bunch of carries in this game," Carroll said.
