The New Orleans Saints beat the Arizona Cardinals 17-10 in the Hall of Fame exhibition game in Canton, Ohio.
CANTON, Ohio — New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees led a touchdown drive on his only series Sunday and the Saints beat the Arizona Cardinals 17-10 in the Hall of Fame exhibition game, officiated by a crew with college experience.
The game was canceled last year for the first time in 45 years, a casualty of the league's lockout of players. Labor issues again came into play this year — the seven officials were replacements and referee Craig Ochoa announced the result of the coin flip incorrectly.
The Saints are dealing with punishment for a bounty program from 2009 through the 2011 season; defensive players were paid for game-ending injuries inflicted on opposing players. New Orleans coach Sean Payton has been suspended for the season, as has linebacker Jonathan Vilma.
Brees was sharp on the opening 10-play drive, completing 4 of 5 passes for 41 yards. Brees skipped offseason workouts and minicamp because he was unhappy getting the team's franchise tag. He later agreed to a five-year, $100 million contract.
Son of Eagles
coach is found dead
BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Garrett Reid, 29-year-old son of Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid, was found dead in a Lehigh University dormitory room early Sunday.
Ed Shupp, Lehigh University chief of police, said an autopsy is expected to be completed in 24 to 48 hours.
"There is no indication of a suicide or foul play," Shupp said.
Garrett Reid, who assisted the Eagles at camp at Lehigh, had a troubled past that included drug addiction and stints in prison.
• Minnesota Vikings receiver Greg Childs tore the patellar tendon in both knees at practice Saturday; the Star Tribune of Minneapolis reported the rookie's career "likely is in serious jeopardy."
• Detroit defensive end Cliff Avril, 26, has reported to camp and will make $10.6 million this season as a franchise-tagged player.
• Chicago receiver Devin Thomas, 25, is retiring.
