Strong safety Atari Bigby signed with the Seahawks Tuesday, adding some experience to the roster and a totally retro first name to the roster.

Bigby, 29, played the previous six seasons in Green Bay. He began last season on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list after undergoing ankle surgery in August. He was activated Nov. 6, played in four regular-season games for the Packers and had a tackle in the Super Bowl victory over Pittsburgh.

He is a hard-hitting, versatile veteran in a secondary without much experience. Before signing Bigby, Seattle's training camp roster had six safeties, none of whom were in the NFL before 2010.

Seattle's starting safeties are both in their second year with Earl Thomas at free safety and Kam Chancellor at strong safety. Josh Pinkard, who spent much of last year recovering from knee surgery, has seen time as Seattle's fifth defensive back in its nickel defense.

Bigby entered the league in 2005 as an undrafted free agent from Central Florida and was signed to Green Bay's practice squad in November. John Schneider, who is now Seattle's general manager, was in the Packers' front office when the team brought him aboard. Bigby started 33 of the 46 games he played for the Packers.

Jordan Babineaux gave Seattle an experienced backup safety last season, but he signed with Tennessee as an unrestricted free agent earlier this month.

The Seahawks also have signed WR Brandon Jones, who went to college at Arizona State. Seattle waived fullback Dorson Boyce and injured tackle Caz Piurowski to make room on the roster for Jones and Bigby.
