Lions QB Stafford ruled out this week

DETROIT — Matthew Stafford got a second opinion on his injured right shoulder, and the diagnosis was the same as the first — no surgery necessary, and no chance of starting this weekend.

Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz said Wednesday backup quarterback Shaun Hill will start Sunday's home opener against the Eagles, but once again declined to put a timetable on Stafford's return.

Stafford sprained his throwing shoulder in the first half of last weekend's 19-14 loss to the Bears. He visited renowned orthopedic surgeon James Andrews on Tuesday and watched Wednesday's practice in a red jersey and white baseball cap.

Hill struggled in a half of work against the Bears in relief of Stafford. He completed just 9 of 19 passes for 88 yards, threw an interception and lost a fumble, but almost led the Lions on a game-winning drive in the final minutes.

• Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Kevin Kolb and linebacker Stewart Bradley have not passed the next phase of their concussion testing and are unlikely to play Sunday.

• Dallas Cowboys right tackle Marc Colombo and left guard Kyle Kosier returned to practice for the first time since being lost to knee injuries during training camp. Barring any setbacks, they'll be in the lineup for the home opener against the Chicago Bears. Cowboys linebacker DeMarcus Ware missed practice because of a head injury but is expected to return Thursday.

• Minnesota Vikings cornerback Chris Cook (knee) returned to practice but is still unsure if he'll be ready to play the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.

• Just three days after getting knocked out of Carolina's season-opening loss with a concussion, Panthers quarterback Matt Moore practiced and expressed confidence he'll play Sunday against Tampa Bay.

• Cleveland Browns quarterback Jake Delhomme did not practice, and his playing status for Sunday's home opener against Kansas City will depend on how quickly he recovers from the first ankle injury of his 12-year NFL career.

• Albert Haynesworth (ankle) was limited in practice, another setback for the Washington Redskins defensive lineman.

• Buffalo Bills center Geoff Hangartner missed practice because of an injured left ankle.

• The New York Jets placed nose tackle Kris Jenkins on injured reserve and signed defensive tackle Howard Green to help replace him.

• Indianapolis Colts safety Bob Sanders is out indefinitely after surgery to repair a torn biceps muscle in his right arm.

• New York Giants tight end Kevin Boss is going to miss Sunday's game against the Indianapolis Colts with a concussion.

• Arizona's Beanie Wells went through a limited workout, and coach Ken Whisenhunt said the team will "really test" the running back's injured knee Thursday.
