April 19, 1997: Walter Jones was chosen with the sixth pick of the draft, which Seattle had acquired from Tampa Bay in exchange for the No. 12 pick and a third-round choice. The Bucs chose Warrick Dunn with the 12th pick.

Nov. 9, 1997: Jones missed Seattle's game at San Diego because of a sprained ankle. It was the fourth game he missed because of injury his rookie year, and the last game he missed because of injury until after he suffered a knee injury on Nov. 27, 2008 at Dallas.

Feb. 6, 2000: Jones played in his first Pro Bowl, chosen as an injury replacement for Tony Boselli. Jones was the first Seahawks offensive lineman to appear in a Pro Bowl.

Feb. 21, 2002: Seattle designated Jones its franchise player after failing to agree on a long-term deal. Without a contract, Jones held out of training camp and missed the first two games of the season.

Feb. 15, 2005: Jones agreed to a seven-year contract with Seattle worth more than $50 million. The signing bonus was more than $16 million. It ended a three-year contract standoff in which Jones held out of training camp every year.

Nov. 27, 2005: Jones was beaten by the Giants' Osi Umenyiora for a sack, the first Jones had given up since Bruce Smith of Washington beat him on Nov. 7, 2003.

Nov. 27, 2008: Jones suffered an injury to his left knee before Seattle's game at Dallas. He gave up two sacks to Cowboys linebacker DeMarcus Ware, but never mentioned the knee injury when asked about his performance after the game.

Dec. 11, 2008: Jones underwent microfracture surgery on his left knee and was placed on injured reserve, ending his season.

Aug. 20, 2009: Jones underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee, cleaning out scar tissue.

Oct. 28, 2009: Seattle placed Jones on injured reserve. Two surgeries didn't fix the pain he felt in his left knee and two months of patience in his recovery weren't enough time for him to heal.

Feb. 7, 2010: Jones posted a message on his Twitter account, saying he'd reached the conclusion he would retire from the NFL. Actually, he initially posted he had reached "the concussion" before correcting it.
