Huskies Camp | Day 11 highlights
What happened: The Huskies held two practices, going in full pads in the morning and helmets, shoulder pads and shorts in the afternoon...
Getting to know ...Darrion Jones, defensive end
Year: Junior Hometown: Compton, Calif. (Lynwood High)
Major: Political science. "I want to be a juvenile P.O. [probation officer] as soon as I graduate. Growing up, living in Compton and seeing a lot of misdirected kids, a lot of violence, I want to change that. I also look up to my aunt and she was a juvenile P.O. and she got me started at a young age. I went to work with her a few times and liked what she did."
Favorite non-football activity: "I would say one of my hobbies would be playing the Nintendo Wii. I got addicted to that due to my roommate, [linebacker] Chris Stevens. He turned me on to that one day, and we played nonstop."
Favorite Wii game: "Probably Super Smash Bros."
You're now slated to be a starting defensive end, but you began your career as a linebacker. How was that switch? "I played defensive end in high school, so it wasn't like a new position. Linebacker was kind of tough because I came in and got thrown in and I really didn't know the basics, what it took to be a linebacker. I thought it was just follow the ball. When I switched back to defensive end [after freshman season] I felt more comfortable."
What happened: The Huskies held two practices, going in full pads in the morning and helmets, shoulder pads and shorts in the afternoon.
Locker still sidelined: QB Jake Locker was still sidelined with no set date for his return, though he was pretty active, putting on a helmet and throwing some passes in the early part of the afternoon practice, then running the steps at Husky Stadium. He has missed eight days of practice, and 11 practices overall including two-a-days, since injuring his hamstring.
Offensive coordinator Tim Lappano said Friday the real danger will come if Locker is not back in a week or so.
"I hope Monday of game week he's ready to go, just for the timing purposes with the receivers," Lappano said. "He's throwing the ball right now, but he needs game week. He needs to be able to get in there with the first receiving group, whoever that is going to be, and make sure the timing stuff is down."
Lappano said there's little doubt Locker is doing all he can to return quickly.
"He's just a warrior out there. Watching him [Thursday, running] the stadium stairs, the hash and foot drills strengthening that thing. He's a machine on all that stuff. Then he comes in and throws seven-on-seven. So who knows when he's going to heal up? But nobody is working harder at it than he is. That's the positive thing, seeing him out there working."
Injury report: A new addition to the injured list is sophomore Victor Aiyewa, who has been running as the No. 1 strong safety. He is suffering from a groin injury. Coach Tyrone Willingham did not indicate how long Aiyewa may be out. Willingham also said true freshman CB Anthony Gobern recently had shoulder surgery, which could mean a redshirt season is in order.
What's next: The Huskies are scheduled for one split-squad practice this afternoon and will then take Sunday off.
