Seahawks Notebook | Locklear is back as starting tackle

Seattle Times staff reporter

KIRKLAND — The last time Sean Locklear started for the Seahawks was in October.

Then came a league-mandated one-game suspension. Then a high left ankle sprain that cost him four games.

Locklear was finally active last Sunday, and appeared on special teams. The ankle is fine, and Locklear will be back at right tackle Sunday when the Seahawks play at Arizona.

"I'd rather be at practice than in the training room," Locklear said. "Guys think it's a cakewalk and coaches call it lemonade and cookies, but you're actually working there, trying to get back."

Locklear's return means the Seahawks go into the game with four of the original five starters on the offensive line that opened the season: Locklear, right guard Chris Gray, left guard Floyd Womack and left tackle Walter Jones. Only center Robbie Tobeck remains out.

And the news on Tobeck, who is coming back from an infection in his left hip, was good. He is doubtful to play Sunday.

"He starts his rehab program and his weight is down. He's probably about 15 pounds down," Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren said. "So he has to regain some of that. But the test, as far as I know, on the actual infection, that went well."

Locklear's return means Tom Ashworth's string of six starts at right tackle ends.

"Ashworth has done a yeoman's job," Holmgren said. "He's one of those guys that when we look back at the season, at some point, we'll say, 'Boy, I was glad that we did that and got him on board this team, because he really helped us.' And Tom will play in the game. They'll both play right tackle."

Engram update

Wide receiver Bobby Engram is questionable with a thyroid condition, and now it's a matter of when his stamina and strength will return to the point he can play.

Engram has missed eight games while on medication to treat the problem, and the most recent test results show his heart rate is where it should be to stop taking the medication.

"He has to, in his own mind, feel like he can contribute and really go like he's used to going," Holmgren said. "So there is light at the end of tunnel on that one. Now, will it be this week? That might be a little bit of a stretch. But we are going to get him back pretty soon, which is good."

Notes

• LB D.D. Lewis is doubtful with a right big toe injury, as is TE Itula Mili with a concussion. DT Rocky Bernard has a right foot problem and is probable. Tobeck, Lewis, Mili, Bernard and FB Mack Strong, who is questionable with a sprained left ankle, did not practice Wednesday.

• The Seahawks signed RB Marquis Weeks to the 53-man active roster, along with DT Marcus Green, who was plucked from the Giants' practice squad. Green, a 6-foot-1, 285-pound rookie from Ohio State, will wear No. 97. Weeks, who was on the active roster from Sept. 30 to Nov. 21 and played special teams, was signed from the Seahawks' practice squad.

• The Seahawks signed QB Gibran Hamdan, who had been on the active roster, to their practice squad. Hamdan was on the 53-man roster from Oct. 24 to Tuesday, when he was waived.

• FB David Kirtman might be signed to the active roster off the practice squad later this week, depending on Strong's recovery. That decision will be made at week's end.

• LB Julian Peterson was not at practice, given an excused absence for a personal reason.
