U.S. Nordic combined team with historic silver

Posted by Ron Judd

WHISTLER -- The U.S. nordic combined ski team made history by winning its first medal in the team competition, a silver, at Whistler Olympic Park today.

Skier Bill Demong of Vermontville, N.Y., skiing the 5K anchor leg of the team relay for the U.S. team, was passed as he entered the finish stadium by Mario Stecher of Austria, who took it home for a gold medal through wet, heavy snow falling in the Callaghan Valley.

The U.S. had begun the race, which has a staggered start based on ski-jumping results this morning, 2 seconds behind Finland, whose skiers faded in the relay race. The American team completed the entire course in either first or second place, locked in a duel with Austria.

The U.S. silver, the first ever in the team competition, ended decades of frustration for the Americans, who were snakebit in previous Olympic contests and world championships. It was the second medal of the Games in the sport for the U.S.

Johnny Spillane of Steamboat, Colo., who skied the third relay leg today, won an individual silver earlier in the Olympics.

The race was kicked off by Brett Camerota of Park City, Utah, who handed off to five-time Olympian Todd Lodwick. Spillane and Demong battled their Austrian counterparts all the way to the finish. The bronze medal went to Germany.

More details coming from Whistler.
