Vonn trips up; Mancuso takes 2nd in combined

Posted by Ron Judd

UPDATE: Maria Riesch, Julia Mancuso, Anja Paerson go 1-2-3 in women's super combined as last skier Lindsey Vonn trips up.

WHISTLER -- Good morning from Creekside, where another alpine medal double could be in the works for the red-hot U.S. Ski Team.

Lindsey Vonn, fresh off her gold medal in yesterday's downhill, is the leader after the downhill portion of the super-combined at Creekside.

Standing second is Maria Riesch of Germany. Holding down third: America's Julia Mancuso.

Vonn's lead over Riesch is .33 seconds. She leads Mancuso by .80. Fourth-place downhiller Fabienne Suter of Switzerland is 1:13 off the pace.

It did not come easily for Vonn.

The bruise she suffered in training two weeks ago, likely inflamed by her hard-charging downhill race yesterday, has been further inflamed.

"It's definitely the most painful it's been since I started skiing (at the Olympics)," she said. "There's nothing really I can do. You know, I just have to try to do therapy and try to tough it out today, and then tomorrow will be a good day off. And then hopefully I'll be ready for the Super G."

The slalom portion begins at 12:30 p.m. You will see it on TV, perhaps, sometime. Fastest combined time (hence the name) wins.
