Lindsey Vonn, SI poster girl
Posted by Ron Judd
It could be seen as a sign of progress that Lindsey Vonn, arguably America's greatest skier ever -- and an inarguable choice for The Big Story in Vancouver -- scored the cover of Sports Illustrated's Olympics preview edition.
But we sort of wonder whether Bode Miller or Ted Ligety -- or even some other members of the U.S. women's squad -- would be pictured quite the same way, all made up and ready for ... something.
Thoughts?
Update: To responders who thought I was calling out the pose for being provocative, probably because of my above ref to "something," which I meant to mean anything but skiing. I was responding to the obvious cover-girl treatment as opposed to the more typical SI action photo. This one was clearly posed on flat ground, probably in a studio, with an athlete in full makeup, a fake backdrop added, etc. It just struck me as a lot more cheesecake than one would typically see on the mag. Any other motivations you'd like to heap upon me are from your own imagination.
I cover ski racing and believe Vonn is probably the greatest skier, male or female, the country has ever produced. If anything, I worry that her pop-star status takes away from people's appreciation of her incredible athletic talent.
