Fresh sushi, without breaking the bank

With the color red once again making a show on my patio thermometer, I went in search of something cold and fresh that wouldn’t find me staring into a bowl of lettuce.
Sushi Maki, a bustling sushi joint tucked away in a busy shopping center in Burien, hit the spot.
There’s no culinary pyrotechnics here, just fresh food and low prices that encourage exploration and overindulgence. Choose from dozens of rolls, raw and cooked, spicy and not.
One of our orders — the Rainbow roll — consisted of a California roll topped with tuna, yellowtail, shrimp, whitefish and salmon, all for $8.95. And that’s on the higher end of the menu.
Sushi for the price of a hamburger and fries. Can’t beat that.
The menu: A diverse selection of rolls ($5.95 to $9.95) featuring standard offerings such as salmon, yellow tail, eel, octopus and tuna in various combinations. The appetizer rolls include cucumber, spicy scallop, crunchy flying fish roe and buttery yellowtail, priced from $2.95 to $5.25.
What to write home about: The eight-piece sushi combo served with a California roll is a steal at $15.95.
The setting: A sunny nook of a place with table seating for 24 and a busy to-go counter. The place gets jammed up pretty quickly, so if you can, go during off-hours or call ahead for to-go items.
Summing up: Four rolls — the Red Dragon, a spicy California topped with spicy tuna ($7.95), a Rainbow ($8.95), eel with asparagus ($6.95) and shrimp tempura ($7.95) — came to $41.43, including tax and tip.
