The Oak grows on Beacon Hill
The Oak, a new burger-and-beer joint on Beacon Hill, is a welcome and promising addition to the neighborhood.

The Oak is the bar-and-burger joint that opened seven months ago on Beacon Hill, and it may look familiar. It’s the younger sibling of the bar Redwood on Capitol Hill.
The Oak borrows much of its rough-hewn aesthetics from its older brother, and for good reason.
Redwood is one of the best dive bars on the Hill. The hipsters and the late rush of musicians and line cooks chill here. Together they have quite the time, littering the floor with peanut shells in between $6 pitchers of Rolling Rock. They are sure to stick around after last call. Best of all, Redwood doesn’t draw tourists and outsiders like the famous dive bar Linda’s Tavern nearby. It feels comfortable and true to the apartment dwellers around East Howell Street.
The Oak, then, comes with much promise.
The owners are setting the bar even higher. It’s a come-one, come-all approach here. Parents and ballers from Little League dine in the family area. There’s even a baker. Food is a notch below gastro pub but 10 times better than dive grub quality.
There’s the signature double cheeseburger: the patties are grass-fed beef and blanketed with globs of melted white cheddar. The goal is to make the best burger on Beacon Hill, the owner said. It just might be. The copious side of Belgian frites are golden and delicious.
The crispy fried chicken sandwich gets stacked so high that no patron can get bun and thigh meat in one bite, but juicy and tasty all the same.
There are craft beers on tap and a Manhattan cocktail redolent of clove and orange peel. The $5 whiskey shot-and-tallboy board special shows there’s still Redwood DNA in this house. But there’s no mistaking that the food and drinks are better than its Capitol Hill sibling’s ever were.
The Oak, 3019 Beacon Ave. S., offers happy hour daily from 4-6 p.m. and all day Sunday with $1 off on beers and cocktails (206-535-7070, on Facebook).
