The Angry Beaver brings the hockey-bar feel and Canadian camaraderie to our side of the border.

Seattle may not have a hockey team, but it now has a hockey bar.
Two weekends ago, for the NHL season opener, The Angry Beaver in Greenwood gave Seattle a taste of what hockey mania looks like. Fans sporting retro jerseys — a few Canucks evident among them — downed Molsons and slurred their way through “Oh Canada.” It was only 11:45 a.m.
By evening, the bar owner had to hustle to Safeway to buy plastic cups because his kitchen couldn’t wash pint glasses fast enough.
Long-suffering hockey fans who’ve been relegated to a corner of the sports bar now have an honest-to-goodness rinkside seat. It’s all hockey here: Jerseys and sticks line the wall, and an autographed jersey of Bobby Hull is encased behind Plexiglass.
There’s Canadian whiskey on the shelves and Kohakee on tap. But you don’t have to follow your Canadian brethren down that path. You can do better: there’s local craft beer as well.
The bar grub is also Canadian inspired, nothing special, but good enough to fortify you between rounds of Manny’s. A decent, Canadian version of the BLT is served (with Canadian specialty Peameal bacon). Some fried beef chunks get glazed in maple syrup, sweet and salty, one of its better snacks.
Poutine, the Quebec staple of French fries draped in fresh cheese curds and gravy, is supposedly this bar’s pride and joy. So why does the kitchen treat it with such indifference? Some undercooked fries were served on one night, and on another, the soggy fries were drowning in far too much gravy.
But few fans seemed to mind. The Angry Beaver is more about the hockey camaraderie.
Owner and Toronto native Tim Pipes opened the Angry Beaver in October and already has had to double his kitchen and bar staff on game nights.
The only thing that could help business more? “If we had a hockey team,” Pipes quipped.
The Angry Beaver, 8412 Greenwood Ave. N., offers happy hour Monday-Thursday from 4-7 p.m. and again 11 p.m.-1 a.m. and all day Sunday, with $4.25 on Canadian beers and other drafts, $4 wine and well drinks. A $10 burger-and-Pabst-Blue-Ribbon deal is featured only during the early evening happy hour (206-782-6044; webpage pending, but there is a Facebook page under the bar’s name).
